Remixing and mashing it up with RIP: A remix manifesto

Last week I taught my class about Creative Commons, Larry Lessig and remix culture. Over the weekend, still feeling inspired by remix culture, I checked out RIP: A remix manifesto:

“RiP: A remix manifesto is an open source documentary about copyright and remix culture. Created over a period of six years, the film features the collaborative remix work of hundreds of people who have contributed to this website, helping to create the world’s first open source documentary.”

One of the best things about the RIP launch is their website, Open Source cinema, which allows user-visitors to actually upload and mashup their own content. I took them up on the challenge and created my very first mashup using a screencast I recorded of my avatar exploring Buddhist Hell in Second Life. I combined my screencast (video) clip with an funky audio track and this was the result. A bit clunky, but hopefully next time, I’ll do something even better!

While exploring Open Source cinema I discovered Kaltura, their wonderful Open Source video player. Kaltura has a great plugin for Wordpress, which allows me to offer my users the opportunity to edit and remix my work. What makes Kaltura stand out is the button that says “remix.”

Upcoming:

I plan to remix and mashup my CC lesson for other educators to use for their own classes. Stay tuned for my first “mashup curriculum” pieces, which I will publish here sometime in the coming months.

  • Thanks for bringing OSC to my attention, I have had so much fun exploring the site and look forward to increasing my knowledge and participation in the open source field.

Nice SL video by the way. We should think about doing some kind of collaboration some time. Something short, quick, and easy. Let me know if you are interested.
